Tram Network

Ocean Terminal with TramIn March 2006, the Scottish Parliament voted to pass the Edinburgh Tram (Line One and Line Two) Bills.

Trams will offer a new public transport choice to Edinburgh’s growing population. Trams are reliable, frequent, easily accessible and able to carry large numbers of people. As passengers will buy tickets before they board, trams will also load and unload quickly.

Trams will provide a new and efficient transport choice for the people of Edinburgh, offering greater connections across the city. The Capital’s modern and reliable tram network will link the Waterfront development with the rest of the city through a world-class service that ensures all areas of Edinburgh benefit economically and socially from the introduction of trams.

On approval of the Business Case presented to the City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Executive in late 2006, work to move all of the underground cables and pipes in preparation for the construction of the tram track itself will start in Spring 2007. Construction of the tram lines, laying track and erecting overhead wires etc. will start thereafter.
